This course consists of a series of advanced modules from the discipline areas of water science, marine geosciences and aqueous geochemistry. The course combines advanced theory in these areas with integrated case studies and applications related to current research topics. The course is highly relevant for the reconstruction of past and present environments using water quality measurements and the remains of organisms. There is special emphasis on how these disciplines are used to constrain regional and global climate change.

1. Understand advanced concepts in water science, marine geosciences and aqueous geochemistry;

2. Explain how water quality measurements, sediment geochemistry and the remains of organisms can be used to reconstruct past and present environments;

3. Evaluate the role of marine geosciences in regional and global climate models;

4. Illustrate how advanced concepts in water science and marine geosciences shape current research directions; and

5. Apply these concepts to their Masters research project.


Indicative Assessment

Assessment will be based on:

• Theory exam  (50% LO 1-4) 

• Practicals (50% LO 2-5)

Workload

Intensive course with a total of 30 hours of lectures and 35 hours of practicals. Students are expected to spend an additional 60 hours on work related to the course

Basic knowledge of chemistry.
