Computer modelling, simulation and visualisation is significantly augmenting and even replacing standard scientific and engineering experiments.

In this module we will investigate the use of numerical modelling and scientific visualisation techniques to obtain a deeper understanding of the results of scientific investigations.

Students will gain experience in applying state of the art numerical software to the solution of real world problems using modern high level scientific computing environments.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Understand a range of important numerical procedures and their role in science and mathematics.
2. Apply sophisticated numerical algorithms and visualisation techniques to real world problems.
3. Be able to work with floating point numbers.
4. Use a high level scientific programming environment (Scilab).

Indicative Assessment

Assessment will be based on:

  • Assignments (LO 1-4)
  • Project (LO 1-4)

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity.
