This course will give graduate students an opportunity to complete an extended and focused piece of written research on a musical topic. Topics will reflect the current research projects of the school and the wider community, and involve the development of skills in collaborative research.

  1. conceptualise, implement, and project manage a piece of original research on a musical topic;
  2. identify, locate, and access appropriate primary and secondary sources; 
  3. analyse and synthesize data accurately drawing on at least one theory and using at least one research methodology;
  4. communicate findings using sophisticated language and a clear structure, and present these findings in a professional format; and
  5. work independently with minimal supervision.

Indicative Assessment

Oral presentation of research proposal, 10% [Learning Outcome 4]

Research paper of 6000 words, 90%, [Learning Outcomes 1-5]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

One hour per week of contact with the supervisor, and nine hours per week of private study.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed or be currently studying MUSI7003 or MUSI8001.
