An important feature of the last two hundred years has been continuous arguments about whether and to what extent development is spontaneous or can be intended or planned. Such arguments have come to the fore once again around the idea of globalization. In particular, debate centres upon the relationship between globalisation and development, or what some see as the opposite effects of the former, impoverishment and under-development. Using the idea of globalisation as a starting point, POGO 8072 introduces students to the principal points of debate which continue to be raised and are influential about development.
This course is only available to students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Public Administration and Graduate Certificate in Public Administration.

Prescribed Texts
There are no prescribed texts. However depending upon availability and suitability, an especially topical contemporary book may be set. The cost of this book is always kept to a minimum by using a cheap hardcover or paperback edition.
Preliminary Reading
Students are encouraged to commence reading the material presented in the Reading Brick before classes commence.
