This course aims to develop students’ capacities in researching and writing in the field of human rights. It will assist students to undertake a research project and to present their work on human rights in a form appropriate to subject matter, purpose and audience. Through a program of workshops (by the convenor, guest lecturers and practitioners) and feedback, each student will formulate an independent research proposal, conduct research on a particular human rights debate or issue, and construct a research output. Students will be invited to reflect on questions of theory, methodology, ethics, audience and presentation in human rights research and communication. This course will bring together the full breadth of skills and expertise acquired in the completion of the Human Rights Major/Minor.

1. Identify, analyse and select from a range of theoretical approaches to human rights issues
2. Locate and evaluate a range of appropriate primary and secondary resources in the field of human rights
3. Design a methodologically and ethically sound human rights research proposal 
4. Identify, and reflect on, best practice in human rights research and writing
5. Construct a substantial research-based human rights project in a form suitable to its content, stated purpose and target audience

 

Indicative Assessment

Oral presentation on research project plan: 20% (LO 1,2,3 & 4)

Research Project Proposal (1000 words):  20% (LO 1, 2 & 3)

Research Project (5000 words): 60% (LO 5)

 

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

130 hours over the semester; including 24 hours of class time, possible site visits, and consultations with a project supervisor.

To enrol in this course you must have completed POLS2113 and one of POLS1005 or POLS1006 or PHIL1004
