The Asia-Pacific Security program provides specialist training in the international, internal, and transnational security challenges currently facing this important region. The Asia-Pacific Security Honours program offers high-calibre students the chance to deepen their skills through independent study of a topic of their choosing relating to Asia-Pacific Security. The Honours year also provides an opportunity for students to bridge the gap between their undergraduate degree and a higher research degree and/or professional employment. Honours students will have access to the ANU's wealth of Asia-Pacific Security expertise and to the extensive holdings of the ANU and the National libraries. Students will have expert supervisory guidance and will share their experiences with other Honours students in the College of Asia and the Pacific (CAP). As a member of the ANU research community, students will be in touch with the latest thinking expressed in the ANU’s frequent seminars, special lectures and conferences on Asia and the Pacific.
Entry Requirements
This will be the umbrella course that constitutes the Bachelor of Asia-Pacific Security (Honours) program. Entry into the program will require the permission of the CAP Honours Committee, based on:
- completion of the coursework component of the Bachelor of Asia-Pacific Security program;
- completion of the coursework component of the Bachelor of Security Analysis program;
- completion of the coursework component of the Asia-Pacific Security major within the Bachelor of Asia-Pacific Studies program; or
- completion of a cognate program or major,
usually within a Distinction average or better.

- Demonstrate a sound knowledge and critical understanding of research design and methods.
- Apply that knowledge to the development of a research proposal and research plan.
- Communicate their critical understanding of research design and methods in a clear and concise way through a series of assignments and participation in seminars.
- Develop the capacity to perform high-level independent research.
- Exhibit in-depth knowledge of their chosen research topic.
Indicative Assessment
- Research in International, Political and Strategic Studies seminar: This assessment relates to learning outcomes 1, 2 and 3. (15%)
- Work-in-Progress course: This assessment relates to learning outcomes 3 and 4. (10%)
- Thesis: This assessment relates to learning outcomes 4 and 5. (75%)
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload
Three hour Research in International, Political and Strategic Studies seminar in semester 1, plus 7-9 hours of independent study per week.
Two hour Work-in-Progress course in semester 2, plus 8-10 hours of independent study per week.
30-36 hours of independent study on the research thesis per week in semester 1 and 2.
