Film in all its genres and formats, from celluloid to the new media worlds of digital FX, continues to be a leading art form and a major means of communication of our time. The Film and New Media minor is designed to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of film culture by addressing questions such as: how do we read films within the new digital environment? What expectations do we bring to films that belong to a particular genre? What do we really mean when we talk about a “documentary film”? What characterizes different national cinemas? How do films reflect their political and social contexts? And how is cinema evolving and conditioning – and being conditioned by - the new interactive screen spaces of digital media? These and other questions are among the many you’ll explore in doing Film Studies at the ANU.
