Professional Practices aims to provide a basic understanding of the economic and legal framework of the art world; to provide an understanding of the skills necessary for an artist to practise professionally and; to introduce resources available to artists to assist their economic survival in the production of art.

  1. Compare and critically analyse venue exhibition presentation
  2. Reflect on and discuss your own learning as it relates to the subject matter of the course.
  3. Use knowledge of the cultural sector in Australia to develop an appropriately targeted package of professional promotional material.
  4. Prepare and present a professional artist¹s portfolio including written material and visual representation.
  5. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the moral, legal and professional framework of the Art and Craft sector.

Indicative Assessment

8 minute oral presentation and written notes of 1000 words (25%) (LOs 1,2, 5)

Preliminary research proposal for major assignment 1000 words (20%) (LOs 3,4,5)

Artist portfolio and project proposal 2500 words (45%) (LOs 3,4,5)

Participation (10%)

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

A 2 hour lecture and 1 hour tutorial per week for 13 weeks. Students are expected to undertake a further 7 hours of independent study each teaching week during the semester (total 130 hours).

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be enrolled in the Bachelor of Visual Arts, Bachelor of Digital Arts or Bachelor of Design Arts, and have completed 48 units of your degree.
