Gold and Silversmithing: Surface as Refinement of Form (ARTV2418)

This is a project-oriented course, which introduces students to an exploration of processes of surface refinement on metal. This includes embossing, patination, plating, powder coating. Students will apply critical thinking to devise an innovative approach to a diversity of surface treatments. Occupational health and safety instruction is an integral part of this course.

  1. Utilise skills relevant to surface of forms in response to Gold and Silversmithing Workshop projects;
  2. Explore material/s relevant to the surface of forms used in Gold and Silversmithing Workshop projects;
  3. Recognise relationships between concept and process relevant to the surface of forms;
  4. Identify historical and theoretical contexts relevant to Gold and Silversmithing Workshop projects. 

Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work (80%) [LOs 1, 2, 3, 4]

Journal/Documentation/Studio (20%). [LOs 3 and 4]

Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. 4 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 6 hours per week independent studio practice.
