Through a series of lectures, seminars, discussions, readings and collection visits students will gain an overview of the history of mass, electronic, digital and new media, from before its invention until the present day, focused on the actual work produced by key practitioners in a wide variety of fields. They will gain an understanding of the key theoretical concepts underpinning media studies. They will learn ways of applying the insights gained from their analysis of the medium to their own creative work. They will gain the historical and theoretical foundations for further research into the medium and its relevance today.

- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of the theoretical concepts and terms in media arts
- Apply learnt concepts of the medium to specific examples from the history of media, contemporary practices, and their own work as media artists
