This course will focus on aspects of the history and culture of Taiwan from the prehistoric period down to the present. Topics covered include the ethnic and linguistic diversity of Taiwan, Taiwan's colonial and post-colonial history, the development of its contemporary literature, and its religious and philosophic traditions.
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate and understanding of issues in the history and culture of Taiwan;
2. Integrate this theoretical and historical knowledge with empirical examples;
3. Locate, analyse, synthesise, and contextualise information from a wide variety of sources, both Western and Chinese;
4. Work in cooperative groups on key issues to do with the history and culture of Taiwan and to communicate findings to others.
Indicative AssessmentTutorial participation - 10% (Related learning outcomes: 1, 4)
Tutorial presentation - 15% (Related learning outcomes: 1, 2, 4)
Major essay - 40% (Related learning outcomes: 1, 2, 3)
Final examination - 35% (Related learning outcomes: 1, 2, 3)

The course comprises a weekly load of two one-hour lectures and one one-hour tutorial. It also demands five hours of tutorial preparation, including assigned readings, and review of lectures each week.
