Investment decisions drive organisational profitability. A crucial aspect of successful management involves determining the right combination of investments. In a world of scarce resources, managers must choose from an almost limitless set of investment opportunities. This course focuses on the tools and techniques which management can use to assist in making successful investment decisions. Such decisions may range from a major corporate acquisition to simple projects.
The objective of the course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of investment decision making. The course takes a value-based management approach and analyses what types of investments add value to an organisation. Students will be exposed to tools and techniques that allow the manager to assess value and consequently estimate changes in value. The course takes an applied focus through the integration of examples, workshops and projects based upon simulated business conditions. While the course is not heavily quantitative, students are expected to have a sound working knowledge of basic algebra.
Topics covered include value-based management, financial mathematics, project evaluation, costs of capital, capital budgeting, pricing of corporate equity, fundamentals of bills and bonds and business acquisitions.

Indicative Assessment
Assessment may include a combination of individual or group reports or assignments, a test or examination and class participation.
