This course is the initial oral component of a one-year intensive beginners program in Modern Standard Chinese (Putonghua or Mandarin).

On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Comprehend audio materials constructed with 500 plus words and phrases (including those on the supplementary word list);
2. Recognise, record accurately, and create oral and written text in pinyin;
3. Pronounce words and phrases using correct tones;
4. Conduct simple conversation with fluency on topics concerning everyday life;
5. Analyse relevant aspects of Chinese culture, such as the norms and forms of Chinese social interaction, and in the process develop their understanding of China's past and present.
Other Information
All students with previous 'language experience or exposure' are required to take a language placement test to determine their language proficiency in order to ensure enrolment into the language course at the most appropriate level.
The Course Convenor, in consultation with the Language Convenor will move students into an appropriate level course if students are deemed to be of a different proficiency level. Students are also encouraged to consult their course convenors immediately upon if they find that their proficiency level differs from that expected by the course.
As language courses are sequential, this may mean that students can only commence their language course in the following semester.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity.
