The aim of this course is to develop technical design and construction skills in woven tapestry and/or flat-bed weaving and basketry.  Design skills are further developed through instruction in techniques and processes of fibre and mixed media construction.  The  contextual and theoretucal underpinning of the area is introduced through discussion of historical and contemporary examples. Critical thinking and creative problem solving are encouraged through design projects. Students will also learn safe working practices and develop an understanding of relevant OH&S procedures to fulfil course requirements.

  1. Demonstrate an appropriate level of competency with use of materials, equipment and tools relevant to constructed textiles processes, through class and individual projects
  2. Understand and make critical use of the characteristics of materials and processes in an individual way
  3. Plan and manage design projects, independently and/or collaboratively
  4. Demonstrate increased critical reflection and contextual understanding on own work and that of other designers.

Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work (80%) [LOs 1 – 4]

Journal/documentation/presentation (20%). [LOs 3-4]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

4 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 6 hours per week independent studio practice.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be studying a Bachelor of Design Arts. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed DESA2904 or DESA3001 or ARTV2004 or ARTV2904 or ARTV2908.
