This course will examine plays of major American playwrights of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries through text analysis and performance activities. A brief history of American Theatre in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries will also be studied. At the end of the course students will be expected to perform in a scene from one of the plays considered during the semester.

  1. Articulate orally and in writing an understanding of key concepts and theatre practices in American drama since the 1940s
  2. Identify and critically analyse these key concepts and practices
  3. Carry out research to select and combine materials concerning the American theatrical landscape
  4. Make appropriate performance methodology choices for performance of selected texts
  5. Apply theoretical  concepts in performance or in a written production book.

Indicative Assessment

2 x 2,000 word essay (25% each) (LO 1,2,3)

2 x assessed in-class and video-recorded workshop performances or project books (2 x 12.5% each). Video-recorded performances will be assessed by 2 examiners (LO 1,2,3,4, 5)

1 x tutorial presentation and 1000 word write-up (25%) (LO 1,2,3).

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

This course will involve one 1-hour lecture, one 1-hour tutorial and one and 2-hour workshop per week. Students should also allow 6-hours per week for associated readings and rehearsals.
(130 hours total workload over the semester).

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed 6 Units of Drama (DRAM) Courses. Alternatively you may gain permission of the Course Convener to enrol in this course.
