Students enrolled in the Cultural and Environmental Heritage sub-plan of the Liberal Arts program may seek the approval of the program coordinator to undertake an independent research project of extended length. The course enables students to undertake an independent research project. The aim of the project is to allow students to apply the conceptual and methodological skills they have developed in the program to a particular research question or case study linked to their academic or professional interests.

2. skills in interdisciplinary thinking and the ability to apply theoretical ideas to case studies developed from personal observation.
3. skills required for humanities research and museum work. This includes data-collection, analysis, and verbal and written presentation at the standard of a postgraduate degree.
4. Model best practice and have a commitment to ethical, reflective practice in regard to heritage studies.
4. skills in thesis planning and writing that are necessary for students contemplating further research projects and for those considering enrolling in a higher degree program (such as the MLA Hons or a PhD).

Indicative Assessment
10,000-12,000 words of written assessment (or equivalent project-based work). The nature of the inquiry will be established at the commencement of the teaching period through a written proposal that will be developed in consultation between the student and supervising lecturer and then submitted to the program coordinator for formal approval.The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students.
