This course introduces fundamental mathematical techniques to be used in applied economics. It serves as a preparation for students who will continue to do Mathematical Methods in Applied Economics (IDEC8015) and Graduate Diploma Microeconomics (IDEC 8016). The course covers topics on linear algebra and calculus. It gives students a taste of applying mathematics in economic analysis. Students are encouraged to actively participate in class discussions.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
1. understand basic linear algebra concepts, such as vector space, matrices, matrix operations, and the determinant and inverse of a matrix;2. understand how linear algebra relates to economics and how linear algebra techniques can be used to solve a system of linear equations in an applied economic context;
3. describe the concept of a mathematical function, understand properties of functions, and use functions to describe and solve economic problems;
4. have a command of basic calculus, including rules of differentiation;
5. formulate economic problems using multivariate functions and be familiar with unconstrained optimisation techniques;
6. understand the concept of constrained optimization and its application in economics.
Indicative Assessment
A range of formative and summative assessment tasks will be used to aid student learning. Feedback will be provided on all tasks. Completion of all tasks is required.The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity.
