This course provides an introduction to the key contemporary issues of international relations and the debates surrounding them. The course is divided into four sections – considering the changing architecture of global order; the governance of recent global crises; the institutions of war, violence and conflict; and the role of values and identities in contemporary world politics. Taught via intensive mode, the course draws on leading specialists and experts to lead class discussion.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

    -       Demonstration of a sound knowledge of key issues in contemporary international relations, and understand how these issues have been conceptualized and theorized in debates within the discipline of international relations
    -       The capacity to critically analyse and evaluate a key contemporary issue in international relations
    -       The ability to communicate understandings of contemporary issues in international relations in a critical and clear manner through both written assignments and participation in seminars and workshops

      Indicative Assessment

      Short Essay: 2500 words (25%)
      Long Essay: 4500 words (45%)
      Examination: 3000 words (30%)

       

       

      The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity.       Workload

      The course requires attendance at four day long workshops, four two-hour seminars, and an introductory lecture in the first week of semester. Students will also need to complete preparatory readings prior to these classes, and 10 000 words of assessable written tasks.
