Extensive reading in contemporary Japanese texts on social, religious, historical, and cultural themes, and discussion of issues raised. No English translation involved. Essays in Japanese will be required.

On satisfying the requirements for this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to be able to read texts related to Japanese culture, society, tradition and philosophy as well as Japanese people, their psychology and way of life on their own with dictionaries. Anyone who wants to read about Japanese society and people written by native Japanese should feel confident to read them deeply and comprehensively. All classes are in a seminar format and are entirely conducted in Japanese.
Indicative Assessment
Two presentations (totaling 30 %), two oral exams (totaling 30%), two summaries of the reading texts (totaling 20%), an annotated bibliography (10%) and self-assessment (totaling 10%).
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students.
