Throughout history and across cultures, music has always been associated with the numinous from Gregorian chant to Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis. But the notion of the spiritual also inspires musical responses ranging from the rhapsodic improvisations of John Coltrane through to the shakuhachi meditations of Zen monks. This course explores the profound relationship between music and spirituality, and asks whether this the basis for music’s universality? Learning and teaching activities will include lectures and tutorials.

spirituality from several theoretical perspectives;
- Summarise central issues and themes on music, religion,
and spirituality, and present these themes coherently;
- Think, write about, and argue key concepts relating to
the role of music and its function in spiritual and religious experiences; and
- Articulate clearly both through writing and discussion, the main issues that lie at the heart of music as a tool for religious and spiritual experiences.
Indicative Assessment
In-class exam (40%) [Learning Outcomes 1-4]
Research essay of 3000 words on a topic provided at the beginning of semester, or approved by the course convenor (60%) [Learning Outcomes 1-4]
