This course addresses perspectives on, and approaches to, program management in development. It examines the strengths, weaknesses and application of the perspectives; the ways in which stakeholders, civic engagement and gender commitments influence the inputs, outputs and outcomes of programs; and the structuring, management and evaluation of program inputs, outputs and outcomes in accordance with appropriate strategies and performance indicators.

A comparative stance is adopted, looking at experience in program management with reference to various contexts, needs, interests and approaches in development.

Key components of the course are group work and an individual report which enable participants to appreciate the significance of issues and concerns in developing a selected project.

 

 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

On successful completion of the course, you will understand and have the ability to assess:

  1. governance concepts and the significance of power in the management of development programs;
  2.  stakeholder needs and interests through an analysis of stakeholders, civic engagement and gender commitments in development programs;
  3.  strategies for the management of development programs, including the logical framework approach and risk assessments;
  4.  integrity and its significance in the monitoring and evaluation of development programs; and
  5.  the design, structure, operation and review of a selected development project.

Indicative Assessment

  • A Project Design: no more than 15 (single space) pages plus annexes. This will be an individual project design write�??up based on the class�??based group work. 60%
  • 20% - An essay of 2,000 words selected from one of the topics covered in the first half of the course.
  • Participation in course, based on attendance, group work, 10%.
  • 10% tutorial exercises based on addressing key program management techniques covered in class.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

6 Hours per week over the 13 weeks including 2 hours face-to-face contact.
