This course is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to develop and undertake public health research. Students will prepare a research proposal, on a topic of their choice, which addresses the background, aims, hypotheses and methodological approach for a piece of research that can be implemented as part of POPH8106 Public Health Research Project. This course is a requirement (with a minimum Distinction grade) for students wanting to enrol in POPH8106 Public Health Research Project. Topics will include: developing research questions; literature searching and review; reference management; research ethics; research project design and methodology.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will be able to:

1.            Formulate an answerable public health research question

2.            Using a systematic approach, search the literature relevant to a public health problem

3.            Interpret and summarise the literature relevant to a public health problem

4.            Describe suitable research methods for investigating public health problems

5.            Develop a feasible research plan, addressing practical and ethical issues relating to public health research




Indicative Assessment

Research question and literature review – introduction to research proposal (30%; LO 1, 2, 3)

Final Research Proposal (70%; LO 4, 5)

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed POPH8100 and be in Master of Public Health or Master of Public Health Advanced.
