An intensive combination of Arabic language study and approved study in a discipline. This work will be undertaken in an Arab country under arrangements made between the ANU and a university in an Arab country. Students will be required to write a researchessay in Arabic and present an oral presentation inArabic, which must be submitted to CAIS.
Students will only be permitted to travel upon completion of ANU required documentation, including, where required, the travel to a high risk destination form and the approval of all documentation by the relevant delegate.
Disclaimer: Applicants are advised that due to circumstances beyond the University's control (for example, specific international security concerns and international health crises) it may not be possible for students to commence or complete the Semester in the Arab World program. An alternative lesson plan will be arranged by CAIS to fulfill the course requirements.

using correct verbal techniques and audience engagement as well as using
accurate grammatical structure, pronunciation and intonation,
- Demonstrate a high level of analytical skills for the chosen research topic in both written and oral terms, with evidence of good application of Arabic linguistics coherent for native readers.
Indicative Assessment
Assessment from the university in the Arab country will be 40%, with the make up of the following:
- 15% language component,(LO 2, 3, 4, 5)
- 15% history and politics, (LO 1, 3, 5)
- 10% culture, (LO 1, 3)
This will be a mixture of written and oral examination as determined by the university in the Arab country.
Assessment at ANU, 60%:
- 40% written-6000 words, (LO 1, 2, 3, 5)
- 20% oral presentation- 35 minutes, which will be recorded, (LO 1, 3, 4, 5)
Upon their return, students will be required to show evidence that they have met the learning outcomes for the assessment undertaken at the university in the Arab country as well as to give a 35 minute oral presentation in Arabic on the research project (up to 6000 words) undertaken at the university in the Arab country. Academic Transcripts as well as course description information will also be required to be submitted to the CAIS Arabic Program Convenor.
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload
Total of 520 hours:
- Teaching at the
university in the Arab country over a period of at least 20 weeks, comprising
of at least 20 hours per week, which are divided into fifteen hours of group
sessions and five hours of individual tutorials.
- Electronic consultation with supervisor back at CAIS, ANU, on the research project and writing and presenting the project (120 hours).
