- Read, listen and comprehend to an advanced level, the Modern Standard Arabic typically used in Arabic-language newspapers and Internet sites, and on Arabic-language radio and television;
- Speak Arabic at an advanced level, in the style and format typically found on Arabic-language radio and television;
- Summarize, in Arabic ,various news reports;
- Write and translate complex, news reports and media texts from English into Arabic and from Arabic into English;
- Comprehend conversations, dialogue, and delivered news to an advanced level, on a range of topics.
Indicative Assessment
Participation in discussion (through the Discussion Forums on Wattle and tutorial participation) - ongoing - 15% of total mark (LOs 1-5)3 x Quizzes (including multiple choice questions, short answer, translation and summary of news bulletin) - 1.5 hours each - 6.66% each for a total of 20% of total mark (LOs 1, 3, 4, 5)
Writing of 3 news items totalling 2000 words (500 words for items 1 and 2, worth 10% each, and 1000 words for item 3, worth 20%) - 40% of total mark (LOs 1,3)
Oral Presentation of a News Bulletin (3 minutes) - 25% (LOs 1,2,3,4)
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload
One hour of online tutorial and nine hours of online activities, practice exercises, further readings and formative assessment per week for 13 weeks. All course materials will be available from the course Wattle site.Requisite and Incompatibility
