This course continues the introduction to the basic skills, techniques and processes of painting developing further the student’s understanding of the principles and conventions of composition and pictorial space. Projects (My Space, The Vanitas, The Broken Mirror and Consumed by Desire) foster a deeper appreciation of the technical and conceptual history of painting with opportunities for individual interpretation and expression.  Studio theory involves lectures and student presentations.

  1. Utilise a range of skills relevant to Painting in response to Workshop projects;
  2. Explore the potential of materials used in Painting Workshop projects;
  3. Produce work which recognises relationships between concept and processes in painting;
  4. Engage with historical and theoretical contexts relevant to Painting Workshop projects.

Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work and visual journal (80%) and Documentation (20%). Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

4 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 6 hours per week independent studio practice.

Requisite and Incompatibility

You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed ARTV1012
