This course provides a general introduction to arts in contemporary Taiwan for students who have an interest in the traditions and practices of East Asian arts. Each year the focus of the course will rotate specific topics, and may include performing art, visual art, or popular culture. This course offers an insight into how this Asian community has absorbed different cultures (Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Dutch, Korean and American) to create a unique culture under the impact of globalisation.

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the historical development of Taiwanese arts and of issues in the arts of contemporary Taiwan;
2. Analyse different forms of Taiwanese arts;
3. Integrate relevant knowledge into practical activities such as appreciation, discussion and comparison;
4. Present a theoretical analysis of the arts in contemporary Taiwan

Other Information

Please note that this is an in country study tour course, and there will only run if there are a minimum of eight students enrolled. Enrolment in this course will be through the terradotta studio abroad site (https://anu-au-sa.terradotta.com/) as a Short Program. Students are required to register on the system in order to apply for the course. There are a number of scholarships and grants available for student who undertake this course in order to assist them to go. Weekly tutorial questions submitted to tutor (10 best counted) - 15% (Related learning outcomes: 1, 2)
Tutorial and workshop participation - 10% (Related learning outcomes: 1. 3, 4)
Two tutorial papers - total 30% (Related learning outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4)
Research Essay - 45% (Related learning outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4)

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

The course comprises a weekly load of two one-hour lectures and one one-hour tutorial. It also demands five hours of tutorial preparation, including assigned readings, and review of lectures each week.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have successfully completed 36 units of any courses.
