This course enables Design Arts students to focus on an individually directed Design-based project in consultation with academic staff. Experimental studio based research explores the convergence of material exploration and developing ideas, informed by contemporary and/or historical precedents in the field of studio  glass, Design, and/or the broader Design Arts. Critical reflection is further developed through integrated studio theory and visiting artist lectures; critiques, tutorials and informal discussion with staff and peers. Students articulate a Design framework for their practice, and will develop, complete and exhibit a substantial body of research and work in glass, with a design focus, at the end of the semester. Students demonstrate an awareness of Occupational Health and Safety appropriate for independent practice.

  1. Demonstrate skill in planning and executing an independent Design project in glass
  2. Develop, research and evaluate design concepts and relevant production processes through creative, critical and reflective thinking
  3. Create a body of Design-based glass work suitable for exhibition
  4. Explain how concepts and techniques underpin the final Design-based glass works
  5. Demonstrate comprehensive awareness of historical, critical and theoretical contexts for the final body of Design-based glass works.

Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work (80%) [LO 1, 2, 3, 4]

and Journal/Documentation/Studio Theory presentation (20%) [LO 2, 4, 5].

Feedback on work in progress is provided during class and at mid semester review session. Final assessment will be based on presented completed works, journals, tests and models.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

3-4 hours per week of contact include demonstrations, technical instruction, lectures, group discussions, tutorials and critiques. 6-8 hours per week independent studio practice.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be studying a Bachelor of Design Arts and must have successfully completed DESA3301. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed DESA2305 or DESA3002 or ARTV2305 or ARTV3026 or ARTV3302.
