This course is intended as an introduction to the theory and
historical evolution of film genres. A crucial aspect of film
studies, and an indispensable tool in the proper appreciation
of especially American/Hollywood cinema, a knowledge of film genres will also enrich an understanding of international cinema more generally, as well as of some of the determinants of emerging forms of the new
media. Genres studied in the course include the
Western, the Road Movie, the Musical, the Horror Film,
Comedy, Science Fiction and Film Noir.

Workload
Two 1-hour lectures, one 1 hour-tutorial and a 2-hour
film screening and an additional 5 hours private study per week.
