This course is intended as an introduction to the theory and
historical evolution of film genres. A crucial aspect of film
studies, and an indispensable tool in the proper appreciation
of especially American/Hollywood cinema, a knowledge of film genres will also enrich an understanding of international cinema more generally, as well as of some of the determinants of emerging forms of the new
media. Genres studied in the course include the
Western, the Road Movie, the Musical, the Horror Film,
Comedy, Science Fiction and Film Noir.

  1. Identify and relate the distinctive markers and stylistic characteristics of the major film genres
  2. Appraise the social, cultural and political significance
  3. of particular generic forms
  4. Investigate the appearance of genres in both national
  5. and international cinemas
  6. Carry out close analysis of cinematic texts

For students contemplating a Film Studies major, we strongly recommend taking FILM1002 ahead of this course.

Indicative Assessment

One 2,000 word critical essay (45%); learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4

One oral tutorial presentation (10%); learning outcomes 1, 2.

One 2-hour end-of-semester exam, (45%); learning outcomes 1, 2

Workload

Two 1-hour lectures, one 1 hour-tutorial and a 2-hour
film screening and an additional 5 hours private study per week.

Students will be assumed to have a basic knowledge of textual and film analysis, gained in FILM1002 or equivalent.
