In this introductory course students begin to develop basic listening and reading comprehension, as well as oral and written Hindi communication skills.  The course provides an introduction to the writing system of Hindi and basic Hindi grammar and training in language learning strategies. Students are introduced to life and cultures of the Hindi-speaking societies and principles of intercultural communication.

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. have a good basic knowledge of the sound system and script of the Hindi language.

2. be able to produce and comprehend various types of simple sentences/ expressions.

3. be able to communicate in Hindi in situations involving every day life and limited topics.

4. have obtained some basic knowledge about Indian cultures and peoples.

5.  have developed good self-study skills for Hindi language learning.

6. demonstrate generic skills, eg, critical thinking, written and oral communication, teamwork.

Indicative Assessment

Three outside-class written assignments (each 600 word  equivalent) – 1800 words - 45%

Ten weekly quizzes, (40 words each) - 400 words - 10%

One 1-hour in-class mid-semester test -                15%

One 10 minute final oral presentation - 15%

One 1-hour in-class final-semester test - 15%


The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity.
