This compulsory course is an introduction to the GDLP. It orients students to the learning methods and software that students will be using, so they can take full value from the GDLP as an educational experience. It also serves as an introduction to the skills of legal practice that students will apply and develop across the GDLP. From the point of view of the APLEC/LACC Competency Statements for Entry-level Lawyers, this course sets the groundwork for:

  • Lawyer's Skills
  • Problem Solving
  • Work Management and Business Skills.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

Students will practise and must demonstrate a basic level of competency in the following areas:

  • Lawyer's Skills including:
    • communicate effectively
    • interviewing clients
    • writing letters
    • drafting other documents
    • negotiating settlements and agreements
    • facilitating early resolution of disputes
    • representing a client in court.

    Students will be introduced and given access to materials in: 

    • Problem Solving
      • analysing facts and identifying issues
      • analysing law
      • providing legal advice
      • generating solutions and strategies.
    • Work Management and Business Skills
      • managing personal time
      • managing risk
      • managing files
      • keeping client informed
      • working cooperatively.

    Note that this course is essentially introductory. Students will continue to develop all of these competencies for assessment across the GDLP, particularly in Professional Practice Core.

    Indicative Assessment

    Demonstration of basic competence in practical exercises Lawyers Skills including:

    • communicate effectively
    • interviewing clients
    • writing letters
    • drafting other documents
    • negotiating settlements and agreements
    • facilitating early resolution of disputes
    • representing a client in court.

     

    The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students.     Workload

    The Course is constructed around a full-time, face-to-face intensive that lasts five days (Monday to Friday). Each day of the intensive lasts essentially from 9.00am until 5.00pm. The course requires some prereading, available online, before the intensive.  Students will be able to access the prereading once they have enrolled in the course.
