Program Requirements

The Graduate Diploma of Military Law requires the completion of 48 units, which must consist of:

48 units from completion of the following compulsory courses:

LAWS8160 Military Discipline Law

LAWS8161 Advocacy for Military Lawyers

LAWS8162 Military Operations Law

LAWS8163 Military Administrative Law

LAWS8164 Advanced Military Discipline Law

LAWS8165 Advanced Military Administrative Law

LAWS8166 Advanced Military Operations Law

Admission Requirements

This program is restricted to approved Defence personnel who hold a Bachelors of Laws, Juris Doctor or international equivalent qualifying the candidate for admission to legal practice in Australia, as well as a Graduate Certificate of Military Law from ANU.

As an AQF Level 8 qualification, the Graduate Diploma of Military Law requires one year of full-time-equivalent study; however, graduates of the AQF Level 8 Graduate Certificate of Military Law will be granted credit for one half year of full-time-equivalent study.

Scholarships

ANU offers a wide range of scholarships to students to assist with the cost of their studies.

This program is taught under contract to the Department of Defence. It is only open to nominees of the Department of Defence, normally serving ADF legal officers. The ANU College of Law Military Law Program covers the LTM2 and 3 levels of the ADF competency scheme for ADF legal officers.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the skills and knowledge to:

  1. review, analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge of military law and provide solutions to complex problems that arise in ADF legal officer practice LTM3;
  2. think critically and to generate and evaluate complex ideas in the context of military law practice;
  3. apply specialised technical and creative skills in military law practice;
  4. communicate military law knowledge and ideas to relevant ADF audiences, both legal and non-legal, including in training contexts
  5. make high-level, independent judgements as ADF legal officers LTM3 in discipline, administrative and operational law contexts; and
  6. initiate, plan, implement and evaluate functions as an ADF legal officer LTM3 in discipline, administrative and military law contexts
