The Bachelor of Politics Philosophy and Economics (Honours) requires the completion of 48 units, which must consist of:

Either:

24 units from completion of courses from the following list:

POLS4009 Special Topics in Politics and International Relations 1

POLS4010 Special Topics in Politics and International Relations 2

POLS4011 Research Training: Scope and Methods

24 units from THES4103 Thesis

HONS4100 Final Honours Grade will be used to calculate the Class of Honours and the Mark. It will be calculated using the formula: Σ (mark x units) / Σ units, giving NCN and WN a nominal mark of zero

Or:

42 units from completion of the following compulsory courses:

PHIL4009 Approaching Research in Philosophy

PHIL4010 Advanced Topics in Philosophy

PHIL4010 Advanced Topics in Philosophy on a topic not taken previously

THES4102 Thesis

6 units from completion of courses from the following list:

PHIL4010 Advanced Topics in Philosophy(6u) on a topic not taken previously

PHIL4011 Advanced Readings in Philosophy

PHIL4012 Topics in Philosophy

Once you have met the program requirements of your degree, you may have enough electives to complete an additional elective major, minor or specialisation.

Admission Requirements

A Bachelor of Politics Philosophy and Economics from the ANU, or equivalent from another institution

Either:

48 units from completion of the Political Science major

A weighed average mark of at least 70 per cent, calculated from the 36 units of courses with highest final marks, excluding 1000-level courses, from the major

Written approval of an identified supervisor for THES4103 Thesis

Or:

48 units from completion of the Philosophy major

12 units from completion of further 2000- and 3000-level courses from the Philosophy major

A weighed average mark of at least 70 per cent, calculated from the 36 units of courses with highest final marks, excluding 1000-level courses, from the major

Written approval of an identified supervisor for THES4102 Thesis

Or:

48 units from completion of the Economic Studies major

A Distinction grade or better in ECON3101 Microeconomics 3 and ECON3102 Macroeconomics 3 which may be double counted towards completion of the Economic Studies major

A weighed average mark of at least 70 per cent, calculated from the 36 units of courses with highest final marks, excluding 1000-level courses, from courses from the major

Written approval of an identified supervisor for the research project/thesis

Adjustment Factors

The National Access Scheme 2014

ANU offers bonus points for nationally strategic senior secondary subjects, and in recognition of difficult circumstances that students face in their studies. 

Bonus points are applied to all applicants with an ATAR at or above 70. Points are awarded in accordance with the approved schedule, and no more than 10 points (maximum 5 academic points and maximum 5 equity points) will be awarded.

Bonus points do not apply to programs with an ATAR cutoff of 98 or higher.

Bonus Points are only awarded to domestic applicants applying for admission through UAC who have not previously attempted tertiary study.

How to apply

Academic Bonus Points: senior secondary students do not need to apply for ANU academic bonus points. They are automatically added in accordance with the schedule.

Educational Access Scheme: senior secondary students do not need to apply if their school is part of the Priority School Funding Program or Country Areas Program. All other applicants should refer to www.uac.edu.au/undergraduate/eas for more information.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will be able to:

1. pose a significant research question relating to politics, philosophy and economics;
2. investigate this question creatively, critically, ethically, and independently, including through sophisticated use of theory and methodology as appropriate to politics, philosophy and economics, and place these investigations in the context of the relevant intellectual tradition; and
3. communicate their research and its findings through an appropriate medium.

Further Information

If a person seeking acceptance into a Bachelor Honours program satisfies or exceeds the minimum requirement for admission to the Bachelor Honours program, the Delegated Authority is not obliged to admit the person to the program only because the person has satisfied the minimum requirement for admission.

The Delegated Authority for the Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics (Honours) plan HPPE is the CASS Associate Dean Students. All admissions to this plan must be approved by the Delegated Authority.
