The course introduces students to a broad over view of Indigenous Australian studies from a wide range of disciplines and perspectives. It places contemporary Indigenous affairs in cultural, archaeological, historical, linguistic , legal and anthropological context and provides a gateway to advanced level courses that make up the Minor in Indigenous Australian Studies. There will be limited international comparison. At least a third of the lectures will be given by Indigenous academics

- Demonstrate an informed understanding of aspects of Indigenous history, language and culture, and policy pertaining to Aboriginal people
- Assess the quality of public debate about Indigenous policy
- Analyse the ways in which history, language and culture informs Indigenous perspectives on a range of topics, including responses to policy
- Think, write and argue with key concepts and knowledge about current policy issues as they related to land, law and health
- Demonstrate a comparative knowledge of Indigenous Australian rights in a world context
- Use specific examples to explore key concepts, themes and theories from anthropology and other disciplinary areas covered in the course
- Select, analyse and present materials on contemporary issues pertaining to Aboriginal persons, policy and events
