This course provides a context for students to refine their skills with the aim of creating a sophisticated synthesis of technique, concept and form. Critical thinking and creative problem solving are encouraged and applied to individual projects. These individual projects develop over the semester in response to critical discussion with staff and peers. Studio theory fosters each student's ability to articulate a contextual framework for their developing practice. Occupational health and safety instruction is an integral part of this course.

  1. Demonstrate thorough knowledge of the processes, terminology, forms and materials of printmedia and drawing;
  2. Apply skills and knowledge to the making of creative works in printmedia and drawing;
  3. Develop and evaluate concepts and processes in printmedia and drawing by thinking creatively, critically and reflectively;
  4. Work independently and responsibly  in a workshop environment;
  5. Reflect on social, ethical, cultural, technological and environmental issues of creative practice considering local and international perspectives.

Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work (80%) [LOs 1, 2, 4]

Journal and Studio Theory presentation (20%). [LOs 1 and 3, 5]

Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

4 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 6 hours per week independent studio practice.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be studying a Bachelor of visual arts degree and have successfully completed ARTV2707 and ARTV2708 or ARTV2704 or ARTV2004.You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed ARTV3705 and ARTV3026.
