Individual Research Courses may be undertaken as electives.  Approval of individual Research courses is subject to the approval of a detailed Research Plan and the availability of appropriate resources.

Courses are built around individually negotiated semester-long projects on a topic which is not otherwise offered by the School of Art. Each individual Research Course is to be described in a document which is drawn up in negotiation between the student and the assigned Workshop Supervisor by reference to a template which describes the project in terms of 1. Aims, 2. Methods and Resources, 3. Context, and 4. Anticipated Outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

At the completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. devise a detailed study/research program
  2. identify and develop experimental strategies
  3. communicate research outcomes in visual and written forms
  4. evaluate  their own work and the work of others relevant to the project

Other Information

The progressive outcomes of the approved research project are assessed by periodic supervisory contact plus review sessions and end-of-semester presentation to an assessment panel. Supervision sessions will provide advice on work in progress in response to approved projects, reviews will provide indicative advice on a student's achievement in relation to the submitted plan, and the end of semester presentation will assess the final outcomes against the agreed requirements.

Indicative Assessment

Research Plan: 10% [LO 1,2] due Week 4
Research Project: 70% [LO 1, 2]
Studio Journal and reflective research summary: 20% (800 - 1000wds) [LO 3,4]

The reflective research summary analyses and evaluates the project and relates it to its contextual framework.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.
