This course introduces students to the fundamental tools of Sinological research. It opens with a survey of the history of Sinology as an intellectual discipline and a critical engagement with influential works from that discipline. It then addresses the procedures of chronology, geography, bureaucracy, biography, palaeography, and bibliography in the context of traditional Chinese studies. These procedures are not exhaustive in any sense; they will be shaped by students' individual research needs. The aim of the course is therefore not to convey factual information so much as to lead students from a dependent and passive approach to the study of China towards a critical and self-sufficient style of research.

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
On the successful completion of this course, students should be able to:1. Identify the major themes, issues, and methods of Sinological research, both past and present.
2. Demonstrate the Sinological methods necessary to locate and interpret information from a variety of sources, both pre-modern and modern, and to apply that information to solving specific practical research questions.
3. Show the ability to present research findings in written forms that might enable their explication to an audience of contemporaries.
