This course guides advanced students in intensive and extensive readings and in analysis and discussion of Chinese texts in a field of specialisation. It is suitable for heritage learners or students who have completed the 'Year in China' course and have an advanced level of proficiency in spoken and written Chinese. The content of the course will cover different aspects of modern Chinese culture and society and will prepare students for independent research in different fields. At the same time, it will improve their skills of reading comprehension, speaking, writing, analysis, and translation.
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Discuss and present on relevant topics of Chinese culture and society in fields of specialization, and to produce advanced-level Chinese language Powerpoint presentations;
2. Analyse the themes under study and offer a critical response to them in writing;
3. Demonstrate an advanced ability to read and understand texts on Chinese cultural and social topics, and to extrapolate meanings from context;
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the differences between Chinese and Western culture;
5. Produce translations from Chinese into English to a high level of proficiency.
Indicative AssessmentParticipation:On-line lectures and tutorials will be conducted weekly to check student’s learning progress on reading and translation skills and their participation in discussion on relevant topics. (Related Learning Outcomes: 1, 3, 4, 5) 10%
Presentation assignment: 20%
Each student is expected to do a 10-15-minute Powerpoint presentation on a topic from the readings of a specific week or of your own choice. (Related Learning Outcomes: 1, 3, 5) 20%
1. A 1,500 character (minimum) book review on a book about China. (Related Learning Outcomes: 2, 3, 4) 30%
2. A 2,500 character essay (minimum) on a topic of readings and research on China or in your field of specialty (Related Learning Outcomes: 2, 3) 40%

WorkloadThe course comprises a weekly load of three contact hours. It demands an average of four hours of tutorial preparation, including assigned readings, and review of lectures. Students are advised that this course is a fully online course.
