This course extends fundamental knowledge of introductory woodworking skills introducing a range of methods to produce curved elements that can be accurately duplicated, and looks to the capabilities of the method and material to inform/inspire the design.  A range of methods for creating curves from solid sections and from laminating and veneering are surveyed, as well as techniques for joinery in curved work. Students will work both during and outside of class to design and fabricate samples and/or components that are repeatable as multiples by use of moulds, forms, or templates.  The course is taught by a combination of readings, lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and supervised practice that exposes students to a combination of technology, theory, history, and design and making processes. Occupational health and safety instruction is an integral part of this course.

  1. Show an increased level of skill with use of Furniture materials, equipment and tools relevant to design in this discipline;
  2. Plan and manage Furniture design projects, independently or collaboratively;
  3. Exploit the characteristics of materials and processes in an individual way;
  4. Demonstrate critical awareness of Furniture design issues.

Portfolio of studio work and visual journal (80%) [LOs 1 - 4]

and Documentation (20%) [LOs 2 - 4]

Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress. 

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

4 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 6 hours per week independent studio practice.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be studying a Bachelor of Design Arts and have successfully completed ARTV1202 or ARTV1012 or DESA1002. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed DESA2203 or DESA2002 or ARTV2203 or ARTV2003 or ARTV2206.
