This course is offered as a Common Option in the School of Language Studies, with the aim of offering students a European intercultural perspective. Contemporary Europe has evolved from a number of European nations and national identities. The focus of this course is literary narrative in European traditions of the 20th and 21stcenturies. Major prose writers are examined, primarily from Europe, but also from Latin America. Texts cover movements such as modernism and postmodernism, as well as representations of colonialism and of the Holocaust. In addition to prescribed texts, which will be available on Wattle, an E-brick of additional prescribed primary and selected secondary sources will be provided.

2. Compare differences in the evolution of narrative technique, primarily in European but also in Latin American literature;
3. Demonstrate mastery of subject matter, including critical terminology (in target languages);
4. Apply information, concepts and theories to illustrate and analyze aspects of European narrative from a national perspective as well as a broader European and global context.
Indicative Assessment

Workload

Recommended courses - any other literature course, and/or cultural studies-type course.Interest in European cultures, possibly even via a language not taught at the ANU, is of course welcome. Assumed knowledge and skills - roughly the equivalent of completion of a fulltime 1st year in an Arts degree, i.e. familiarity with essay-writing and tute/seminar techniques.
