An overview of major prose works from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, written during the last century. Authors are likley to include Kafka, Böll, and Ingeborg Bachmann, but also a contemporary text, incl. Turkish-German literature. Aspects of literary history and theory, as well as the social context of the works will be discussed.

Indicative Assessment

Tutorial assessment throughout the semester (10%) [LOs 1, 2, 4, 5]

An essay of 1200-1500 words, worth 40%, due semester teaching break [LOs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

An essay of 1500-1800 words, worth 50%, due during the exam period [LOs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Workload

2.5 contact hours/week (weekly lecture and tutorial; fortnightly seminar). Beyond that, time spent will depend very much on students' reading speed in German, but no long texts (e.g. full-length novels) are prescribed.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have successfully completed GERM2106 or have equivalent level of language proficiency as demonstrated by placement test. Alternatively you may gain permission of the Course Convener to enrol in this course.
