This course examines Australia in the twentieth century and places Australia’s story in the broader context of political, social and cultural change over the twentieth century. While the primary focus will be the period 1914 to 1945, there will be a consideration of the Cold War and South-East Asian conflicts. It will include some consideration of key political movements and ideas in the twentieth century; the impact of war on society and culture; the causes and consequences of the twentieth century’s major conflicts; the development of the UN and peacekeeping; and responses to war, including anti-war philosophies and movements.

- Identify and understand the key features of Australian involvement in war through the 20th century, and place this history in its broader international context;
- Analyse and assess the impact of war on Australia’s development and history through the 20th century;
- Reflect on the role of war and conflict in shaping world history through the 20th century;
- Undertake historical research using primary and secondary sources and produce written pieces demonstrating historical analysis and argument;
- Demonstrate in-depth understanding of at least two selected topics within the course (as demonstrated in essay assessment pieces).
Indicative Assessment
Assessment will consist of:

Workload
Approximately 120 hours, including working through the learning package and e-readings, participating in online activities, and completing assessment.
An optional residential workshop (to consist of 2 days on ANU campus undertaking workshops, excursions and research) will be offered.

A learning package / set of e-readings will be supplied at the beginning of the semester.
Students should also purchase Jeffrey Grey, A Military History of Australia (3rd edition, 2008).
