These courses are mainly for postgraduate and Honours students on an individual guidance basis. Students may choose any relevant reading materials to their thesis and read them through with an instructor. When there are a few students in class, the same reading materials may be chosen by them to read together in one class per week. All classes are entirely conducted in Japanese.

The course draws on pre-modern, modern or contemporary materials, as appropriate, with a view to developing students' research and bibliographic skills in advanced studies in the humanities and social sciences.
Flexible Individual Project (30%), Mid-term take-home report (35%); final take-home report (35%).
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity.
