This course serves as an introduction to the field of Chinese linguistics. A range of Chinese varieties will be studied, with respect to the sound system, lexicon and sentence structure, cultural meanings and the writing system. Students will have the opportunity to work with natural (spoken and written) data to gain an understanding of the similarities and differences across these varieties. We will also consider some of the more unusual features of Chinese languages within the areal perspective of East and Southeast Asia. While this course may be of particular interest with students who have prior knowledge of Chinese, such knowledge is not required.

1. Demonstrate a deep understanding of the field of Chinese linguistics
2. Apply analytical techniques to describe more complex features of a variety of Chinese language based on natural data
3.  Critically evaluate an aspect of Sinitic languages.

How to enrol into a course offered in a non-standard session (Summer Session, Autumn Session, Winter Session, Spring Session):
  1. Complete an Enrolment Variation Form (including the Course Code, Class number and Session).

Indicative Assessment

Two analytical assignments, 3 pages each (30% each for a total of 60%) [LOs 1, 2]
Essay, 2500 words (30%) [LOs 1, 3]

Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
 a) 39 hours of contact: 26 hours of lectures and 13 hours of workshop and workshop-like activities.
 b) 91 hours of independent student research, reading and writing

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have successfully completed LING6001. Alternatively you may gain permission of the Course Convener to enrol in this course. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed LING2017.
