This course introduces students to the fundamentals of music technology and focuses on the theoretical, underpinning knowledge of the construction of acoustic and electric instruments, as well as digital music production, dissemination and reception. The course also introduces students to industry-standard software, including Sibelius and Pro Tools and makes regular use of the School of Music’s own cutting-edge music technology lab. With a strong emphasis on research-led teaching, this course will equip students with the underpinning knowledge required for progression into sound recording and music production. Course topics include: acoustic and electronic instrument technology; digital music recording, format carriers and online dissemination; music technology and consumption; the place of analogue technologies in a digital world; and, practical software sessions.

4. Hypothesise on the implications of digitisation for music production, dissemination and reception.

Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
  • 38 hours of contact time - 1 x 2-hour lecture or studio/ lab workshop/ seminar  and 1 x 1-hour tutorial per week for 13 weeks.
  • 92 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
