This course introduces you to principles by which archaeological projects are devised and executed. It will provide you with basic skills that you will need should you continue into postgraduate study. Specifically, you will learn how to write an excellent thesis and/or academic publication. In addition you will undertake data analysis of a real archaeological assemblage and apply quantitative analyses (including statistics) to understand patterns within this assemblage. Finally, the course will provide you with useful techniques for presenting and promoting your results to an academic audience.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. Critique archaeological theses and evaluate the quality of research;
2. Apply essential research skills for writing thesis chapters or academic papers.
3. Undertake quantitative analysis including statistical analysis;
4. Present and interpret data in oral and written academic forums.

Indicative Assessment

1000 word thesis critique (20%; LO 1).
Laboratory portfolio (30%; LO 3).
10-15 minute oral presentation (10%; LO 2,3,4)
2000 word short report (40%; LO 2,3,4)

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

Three hours of contact time, including 2 hour lectures and 1 hour practical laboratories over a 13 week period. Students are expected to undertake a further 7 hours of independent study each week over the semester (total workload 130 hours).

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol you must have completed ARCH1111/ARCH1112 and 18 units of 2000 or 3000 level Archaeology (ARCH) Anthropology (ANTH) or Biological Anthropology (BIAN) courses or with permission of Convener. Must not have previously completed ARCH6500 or ARCH8102
