The course is for students with a considerable level of attainment in one of the major Southeast or South Asian languages taught in the School (Hindi, Indonesian, Thai, Vietnamese or Sanskrit). Enrolled students conduct an independent research project under of the supervision of the course coordinator (or someone else if deemed necessary and available), on a common theme that may change from semester to semester. Meetings with the course Coordinator or a substitute Supervisor are usually five times in the semester (roughly every two weeks). In these meetings, the lecturer can give broad guidelines in the beginning of the semester. Class meetings are for students to report their work in-progress or discuss the readings assigned by the course coordinator in the semester.

Workload
Fortnightly meetings with Course Coordinator or Supervisor. Students are expected to read approximately 10 academic and non-academic texts in the target language, each about 6,000 words, and demonstrate the ability to capture the various subtleties and nuances that run through the selected readings.Requisite and Incompatibility
