During the last four decades, China has undergone a dramatic process of 'economic reform and opening up' under the political leadership of the Communist Party of China. The combination of economic reform and political stability has generated rates of economic growth unprecedented in world history, triggering profound economic and social change within China and substantially altering China's role in an increasingly globalised world. While pursuing 'harmonious development' and a 'peaceful rise', China is confronted with many challenges and conflicts that have emerged as a consequence of rapid growth and change, relating to demographic change (including an ageing population and rising gender imbalances), urbanisation, environmental degradation, human and legal rights, regional security and global trade. This course will address these and other issues in a series of four modules - Reform and Stability, Growth and Change, Conflict and Harmony, and Wealth and Power - in order to provide students with a deep understanding of China's dramatic transformation, and its far-reaching implications for China and the world.
This course is designed to be delivered online. CIW will organise opportunities for on-campus students to interact with lecturers and tutors, including regular office hours and "CIW student days".
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students.
