This is an upper level course designed to introduce advanced students to a range of key writings in Chinese history. The course provides training in the close reading of a variety of representative historiographical texts from differing periods of Chinese history

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

Understanding of key concepts and issues in Chinese history; to integrate this theoretical and historical knowledge with empirical examples; learn to think critically; develop skills in synthesising and contextualising new information; develop skills to locate, analyse, evalue and synthesise information from a wide variety of sources, both Western and Chinese; develop an ability to work in cooperative groups on key issues in this field of Chinese Studies and to communicate findings to others; to develop a life-long interest and intellectual curiousity in this area.

Indicative Assessment

Two short translations (25% each)

Tutorial participation (10%)

One tutorial paper (20%)

Final test (30%).

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students.
