Composition, Arranging, and Sound Design 6 builds on the theory and aural skills developed in the prerequisite courses Music Theory and Aural Skills 1-4 to develop basic compositional skills using large ensembles (e.g. symphony orchestra, big band, wind ensemble, etc.). Students will develop a portfolio of compositions that will include a Commission Project for one of the School’s ensembles in addition to works in one or more genres of the student’s choice (for example, electronic or film music). Teaching and learning activities will include a weekly composers’ seminar in which composition students from all levels will discuss current work and wider compositional issues, and an orchestration seminar.

1. Demonstrate a solid compositional proficiency in one or more styles (classical, jazz, contemporary), or a high level of knowledge of improvisation techniques across a variety of harmonic and rhythmic settings and forms.
2. Critically consider relevant compositional issues in highly developed aesthetic and technical terms, or apply highly developed improvisational techniques to a chosen instrument.
3. Present works professionally using appropriate instrumentation and orchestration techniques, and produce work according to deadlines that demonstrates an awareness of professional industry standards.
4. Make and justify the creative decisions made in the course of compositional, arrangement and/or improvisational activities.
