This course is a practical introduction to an Indigenous Australian language. It is designed to develop basic speaking, listening, reading and writing skills at an introductory level, and to develop a knowledge and understanding of the relation between language culture and society in the community of the speakers.

This course may be offered on campus or off-campus (location(s) to be advised for each offering), and delivered over the course of a semester or in intensive mode. This course is available for cross-Institutional enrolment.

Students will only be permitted to travel upon completion of ANU required documentation, including, where required,  the approval of all documentation by the relevant delegate.

Disclaimer: Applicants are advised that due to circumstances beyond the University's control (for example, specific community security concerns and health crises) it may not be possible for students to commence or complete this course. An alternative lesson plan will be arranged to fulfil the course requirements.

  1. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the grammar and lexicon of the Indigenous Australian language.
  2. Demonstrate communicative skills allowing them to ask questions, give directions and discuss some topics confidently in the Indigenous language.
  3. Read and understand a range of short texts in an Australian Indigenous language.
  4. Write short texts in an Australian Indigenous language.
  5. Research and discuss cultural and traditional practices specific to the Indigenous Australian community.

Weekly online/tutorial exercises, 1,500 words (25%) [Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Regular oral recordings, totalling 12 minutes (15%) [Learning Outcome 2]
Quizzes, around 500 words total (10%) [Learning Outcomes 1-3]
Conversation, 5 min (30%) [Learning Outcome 2]
Written assignment, 2,000 words (20%) [Learning Outcomes 1, 5]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 36 hours of contact:  36 hours of seminars and/or online class time.
b) 94 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed AUST1001.
